Me sent\u00eda esperanzada, y una vez de vuelta en Panam\u00e1 empec\u00e9 a experimentar con lo aprendido. Pero sinceramente, no me hubiera atrevido a ofrecerlo ni a intentar un muro sin la llegada de mi colega Andoni Iriberri. Fue construida en 2021. Para empezar a compartir ese proyecto, me gustar\u00eda empezar con el muro de tierra apisonada que presenta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Este muro es un elemento decorativo que conecta uno de los dormitorios con la terraza\/sala de estar, permitiendo apreciarlo en la vida cotidiana. No estoy seguro de que sea el primer muro construido con este sistema constructivo en Panam\u00e1, pero podr\u00eda serlo - y estoy seguro de que no ser\u00e1 el \u00faltimo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al ser el primero, el proceso fue naturalmente lento. Realizamos muchas pruebas con diferentes proporciones de material y arcillas locales. Ampliamente utilizada, sobre todo en China, esta t\u00e9cnica se aplic\u00f3 tanto en monumentos antiguos como en la arquitectura vern\u00e1cula, incluidas secciones de la Gran Muralla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aunque el inter\u00e9s por la tierra apisonada decay\u00f3 durante el siglo XX, en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os se le ha vuelto a prestar atenci\u00f3n, sobre todo por su sostenibilidad en comparaci\u00f3n con otros m\u00e9todos de construcci\u00f3n m\u00e1s modernos. La mezcla suele consistir en arena, grava, arcilla y un estabilizador; en nuestro caso, utilizamos peque\u00f1as cantidades de cal y cemento en un porcentaje muy bajo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La mezcla incluye una peque\u00f1a cantidad de agua para humedecerla, pero permanece relativamente \u201cseca\u201d. Las capas visibles de tierra crean una hermosa textura natural, y pueden utilizarse arcillas de diferentes colores -incluso moldeadas- para conseguir un aspecto \u00fanico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Los materiales para este tipo de muro suelen poder obtenerse localmente (aunque siempre es necesario hacer pruebas). Si alguna vez se derriba la estructura, la tierra del muro puede reutilizarse, lo que la convierte en una opci\u00f3n muy sostenible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La tierra apisonada tambi\u00e9n ofrece una gran capacidad estructural, durabilidad y buena resistencia a la humedad, aunque no a la lluvia directa. I felt hopeful, and once back in Panama I began experimenting with what I had learned. But honestly, I wouldn\u2019t have dared to offer it or attempt a wall without the arrival of my colleague Andoni Iriberri. Thank you for being and for being here. These construction systems involve a lot of trial and error, so my recommendation is to always have an ally \u2014 a consultant or experienced professional \u2014 as it will save you significant time, effort, and materials. Casa Nance is my home, and it became the testing ground for this construction system. It was built in 2021. To begin sharing that project, I\u2019d like to start with the rammed earth wall it features. This wall is a decorative element that connects one of the bedrooms with the terrace\/living area, allowing it to be appreciated in daily life. I\u2019m not sure if it\u2019s the first wall built with this construction system in Panama, but it might be \u2014 and I\u2019m certain it won\u2019t be the last. Since it was the first, the process was naturally slow. We conducted many tests with different material proportions and local clays. The formwork, assembly, and ramming process also became a learning curve for the local builders, who developed new skills throughout the construction. Historic background Rammed earth, also known as tapial, has been used in construction for thousands of years, with evidence dating back to the Neolithic period. Widely used \u2014 particularly in China \u2014 this technique was applied in both ancient monuments and vernacular architecture, including sections of the Great Wall. Although interest in rammed earth declined during the 20th century, it has seen renewed attention in recent years, especially for its sustainability compared to more modern construction methods. Rammed earth structures use locally sourced materials, resulting in low embodied carbon and minimal construction waste.
